RRDF™
Remote Recovery Data Facility
Continuous Availability
All Day–Every Day
Information systems form the foundation of today’s healthy, growing businesses. And, as such, these systems must be ever ready to meet the simultaneous demands of customers, clients, employees and the Internet. Including telephone and on-line business, it is not uncommon for networks to process between 500 and 1,000 transactions per second. Downtime means lost customers. Therefore, information professionals are increasingly challenged to improve productivity and operating efficiency, while accommodating more users, more often. In this environment, the ultimate goal is to provide continuous availability: systems that are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—even during scheduled maintenance and unplanned outages.
E-Net’s Remote Recovery Data Facility™ (RRDF™) meets the requirements of companies with high availability or continuous availability demands: continuous availability and no data loss.
RRDF’s patented technology captures each new log/journal record and transmits it in real-time to a remote shadow database, without affecting the performance of the production system. If a scheduled or unexpected outage occurs, it takes just a few minutes to switch processing from the production database to the shadow.
E-Net software effectively protects your company from losses associated with system downtime. These can include:
- Lost Business Transactions, those that are in flight at the time of the outage, or attempted while the system is idle. Industry analysts estimate that lost data or applications cost the average business $70,000, or more, per hour.
- Lost Customers, who prefer to take their business elsewhere.
- Additional Costs, like overtime and product losses.
The ability to switch back and forth between production and shadow databases means that the system is always available, even during system maintenance, database reorgs, or hardware maintenance. RRDF also provides superior data protection during unexpected outages caused by natural disasters, electrical outages, vandalism and other calamities.
Unlike other continuous availability solutions that create wasteful, useless duplicates, RRDF implements a fully functional read-only database. Customers and employees can freely access the shadow database without affecting the performance or integrity of the production database.
The stakes are high, and companies that implement RRDF shadow databases find equally compelling rewards:
- Data warehousing and data mining
- Complex SQL queries
- Batch reporting cycles (quarterly and year-end reports, etc.)
- Local database copies at multiple distant sites
- Load balancing
Or, use the shadow database to isolate groups of users from the production database to protect its integrity. This is helpful when granting external users (business partners, etc.) access to the corporate database.
Businesses and consumers are becoming increasingly interconnected and information systems serve as the conduit between the two. To exploit available opportunities, products and services must be available on a 24/7 basis. Consider RRDF as an affordable business continuity solution that offers multiple benefits.
RRDF automatically recovers from unforeseen system outages, abends and operational errors with no impact on users. It is easily maintained and operated, enabling true 100% continuous operation — 24 by 7 by 365. Your applications are always up. Your information is available all day — every day.
Data Replication
Double-Duty Database
Today’s global information economy has redefined the nature of business and the expectations of customers. The Internet, call centers, automatic tellers and other electronic transaction media put information-hungry customers directly at the corporate front door, at all hours. In addition, the corporate database must respond to input, edits and queries from employees and other internal sources. Faced with a sea of data, information systems must collect, analyze, categorize and redistribute information—quickly. Consequently, information professionals are under increasing pressure to improve productivity and operating efficiency, while accommodating more users, more often.
As corporations wrestle with this information bottleneck, many consider the advantages of implementing a data replication solution. This working copy of the production database can deliver several immediate benefits to both employees and customers, including:
- Reduced query traffic on the production database
- Faster response times for mission critical applications
- A dedicated resource for read-only inquiries
- System backup and continuous availability
E-Net offers its Remote Recovery Data Facility (RRDF) as a continuous-replication solution. RRDF works in concert with your current DBMS software. It captures each new log/journal record and transmits it, in real-time, to a remote replica database without affecting the performance of the production system. And, unlike other replication solutions, RRDF works continuously, propagating each transaction as it occurs.
RRDF’s homogeneous master/slave topology delivers a faster, unencumbered production database, and a perfect duplicate database, well suited for corporate Decision Support Systems (DSS) or other read-only applications, including:
- Data warehousing and data mining
- Complex SQL queries
- Batch reporting cycles (quarterly and year-end reports, etc.)
- Secure data access for Internet users
- Local database copies at multiple distant sites
- Load balancingThese functions can be performed freely on the shadow database, without affecting the performance of the production database, leaving it free to respond quickly to on-line transaction processing (OLTP) and other mission-critical requests.

Reliable Data
RRDF’s spill file and gap recovery processing provide additional data protection. If a log/journal transmission is interrupted, updates are automatically buffered in a disk spill file. Then, when communication is restored, RRDF transmits the spill file data and resynchronizes with the receive site. During remote site outages or software/hardware failures, RRDF automatically retrieves any lost data from the send site log/journal files. It then transmits the data to the remote site. If the database writes a log/journal record, RRDF guarantees its arrival at the remote site while ensuring the integrity of the complete transaction.
Having a remote replica of a production database also intrinsically provides quick recovery capabilities in the event of an unplanned outage at the production site. In such an event,
it takes just a few minutes to switch processing from the production database to the
shadow.
RRDF is a versatile solution, appropriate for companies that require the benefits of data replication along with instantaneous recovery from planned or unplanned outages.
Data Recovery
Without Data Loss
Modern, high-speed Internet and call center transactions have replaced manual data entry. If a transaction is missing, there is no paper trail. And, because electronic transactions occur so quickly, the amount of work or business lost in an hour can far exceed what might have been lost five years ago.
In this competitive environment, missing transactions quickly translate into lost customers and lost business opportunities. Therefore, more than ever, businesses must strive to
protect each transaction from loss and corruption.
Setting recovery goals helps your company determine its tolerance of downtime and data loss. Companies with high-traffic data centers cannot bear even minimal downtime and require immediate restoration.
E-Net products meet the remote recovery requirements of companies with continuous availability or high availability demands: immediate recovery and no data loss. Unlike traditional incremental backups, which lose all transactions between the last backup and the outage, E-Net software restores all transactions, up to the time of the outage.
EDR™
E-Net Enterprise Data Replicator sets the new standard in database application availability. EDR provides replication and propagation solutions designed specifically for real-world applications. High-value. High-volume. Critical systems which have the ultimate availability requirements. Not 99%. Not 99.99999%. Systems that require 100% uptime. If you have an application which absolutely must be available at all times, you should consider EDR.
E-NET2™
E-NET2 is a highly cost-effective shadow database facility that permits a user to maintain a remote shadow IDMS database, working together with RRDF. E-NET2 can also be used on a stand-alone basis to maintain a local shadow database.
E-NET7™
E-NET7 utilizes enhanced “Huffman” encoding techniques that perform a sophisticated bit-level compression tailored to the user’s data stream. Because of the “scrambled” nature of the encoded data, the results may, in addition, satisfy security requirements.
